CPA, CMA · Former IRS Revenue Agent · Founder

I have seen the tax system from three sides. At Deloitte I helped large organisations design compliance. At Amazon I sat with the operators, turning numbers into decisions. At the Internal Revenue Service, as a Revenue Agent, I examined what all of that looks like once someone has to defend it. What I found was rarely fraud. It was people paying more than they needed to because nobody had helped them plan before the transactions happened and people who had planned well losing the argument anyway, because the documentation could not carry it. Trustber exists to close both gaps. Taxes should be planned, not merely filed.

Career

Advisory, operations, and enforcement.

Most tax advisers have seen the system from one angle. This career has covered three: designing compliance inside a Big Four firm, using financial analysis to drive decisions inside one of the largest companies in the world, and then examining tax positions from inside the IRS itself. Each of those changes how you read a return. Together they are why Trustber builds positions to be shown rather than merely claimed.

Inside the IRS

What the enforcement side teaches you.

Working as a Revenue Agent means reading a return the way an examiner reads it starting from the documentation and working back to the claim, rather than the other way round. You see very quickly which positions are supported and which are only asserted, and how little that difference matters until the moment it matters entirely. Most of what fails does not fail because it was wrong. It fails because it was never set up to be proved: classifications applied loosely, records reconstructed after the fact, structures adopted for a reason nobody wrote down at the time. Few advisers have sat on that side of the table. Fewer still have also sat on the Deloitte side, where those positions are designed in the first place, and inside a company the size of Amazon, where they have to survive contact with how a business actually runs.

  • Returns built to be examined, not merely filed
  • Classification and documentation decided before the transaction
  • Positions supported by records made at the time
  • The standard is defensible, not just arguable

Approach

How I work.

Document as you go

A position taken today is defended with the file built today, not with a reconstruction assembled under examination.

Say when it does not pay

Not every strategy is worth its cost. Being told plainly when something will not work for you is part of the service.

Plan across the year

April is where the year is reported, not where it is decided. The decisions that matter happen well before it.

Explain the reasoning

You should understand why a position was taken, not just what the number came out as.

Start with a conversation.

A first conversation costs nothing and settles quickly whether this is the right firm for your position. If it is not, you will be told so on that call.
