Tax Filing & Preparation

The return itself, prepared accurately and filed on time. Most people meet a CPA at this point, and it is where a firm proves whether it is paying attention, because the questions asked while preparing a return are what surface next year's planning.

Who this is for

Individuals and families

A 1040 with more moving parts than a single W-2, investments, a side business, rental income, or a year in which something changed.

Business owners

An S-corp, partnership or C-corp return, prepared alongside the owner's personal return so the two agree with each other.

Anyone filing in more than one state

Moved during the year, worked across state lines, or owns property somewhere you do not live.

Military families

Legal residence against duty station, and a spouse earning in a state neither of you is resident in.

People catching up

Unfiled years, or returns that need amending. Both are more common than anyone admits, and both are fixable.

Scope

What is included

  • Federal and state returns

Prepared, reviewed and filed electronically, with the state position handled properly rather than defaulted.

  • Multistate allocation

Income sourced to the right state, and residency treated correctly where the year included a move.

  • Business returns

1120-S, 1065 and 1120 prepared to agree with the books and with the owner's personal return.

  • Supporting schedules

Depreciation, basis tracking and carryforwards maintained year to year rather than rebuilt each spring.

  • An extension when it is the right answer

Filed properly and explained. An extension is a timing tool, not a failure, and rushing a return to avoid one is usually the worse choice.

  • A planning note

Every return finishes with what could be done differently next year, in writing.

Process

How it works

  1. Organiser

A short questionnaire and a document list, so you are not guessing at what to send.

  2. Preparation

The return is prepared and every position documented as it is taken.

  3. Review

We go through it together before anything is filed. You should understand your own return.

  4. Filing

    Filed electronically, with confirmation.

  5. Next year

The planning note is the starting point for the following conversation, so filing and strategy are not two separate relationships.

Engagement

How fees work

Preparation is quoted per return once we have seen the prior year and understand what is actually involved. Complexity, not income, drives the fee, a modest income with three states and a rental takes longer than a large salary with nothing else attached.

What determines the fee

  • Number of returns and entities
  • How many states are involved
  • Rental properties, investments or a business schedule
  • Whether prior years need catching up or amending
  • How organised the records are when they arrive

Questions

Before you get in touch.

Can you file returns for years I have missed?

Yes, and it is worth doing sooner rather than later, penalties for failing to file are considerably heavier than for failing to pay. Bring what records you have; we work from what exists rather than what should exist.

What is the difference between this and Tax Strategy?

Filing reports what already happened. Strategy changes what happens next. The return has to be accurate either way, but the planning is what moves the number, and it has to happen before the transaction, not at filing time.

Do I have to be local to Austin?

No. The work is done remotely for clients across the United States, and multistate returns are a routine part of the practice rather than an exception.
